Illustration
Coming up with an idea for the Illustration assignment was challenging because when theres an issue that bothers me I am really passionate about it and so I have found it hard to pick an issue and illustrate it through just a few photos. Initially I had thought I wanted to do something about domestic abuse victims and shooting one that is far from the stereotypical image of what this looks like. Due to lack of resources I transitioned away from that idea and that night attended a guest speaker in the Eccles Fine Arts Center. This is where I very unexpectedly found my topic for my Illustration.
Jessica Cox was born without arms. More significantly, she is a certified scuba diver, holds two blackbelts in martial arts, and is the very first person to become a certified pilot without arms. I took this photo of her signing her book titled "Disarm Your Limits". Through my editing of the photo I wanted to illustrate and speak on behalf of the handicap community and portray them in a way that I feel is not done enough. Socially, members of the handicap community are commonly portrayed in ways that are very inaccurate and offensive. Due to our culture in America, people generally have very little knowledge of disabilities and either don't say anything about them or to people with them or they say the wrong thing. After hearing Jessica speak about her accomplishments and the ways she wishes people would view disabilities I decided to try my best to illustrate this through my photo.
